The Search of Mavin Manyshaped (1985) is the third Fantasy novel in the Mavin subseries, following The Flight of Mavin Manyshaped. In the previous volume, Mavin negotiated a treaty with the stickies. The Banders fell into a hot pool. The stickies lured the oozies onto the net. Mavin took Handbright's child back to their cousins. In this novel, Mavin is a shapeshifter of the Danderbat family. She and her older sister Handbright were the only remaining maidens in the family. Now Mavin is searching for Himaggery.
Himaggery is a wizard. Mavin had parted from him at Pfarb Durim. But he had extracted a promise from Mavin that she would return to him in twenty years.
In this story, Mavin is returning to Pfarb Durim after almost twenty years. Himaggery is not there, but a packet is waiting for her. It contains a note from Windlow and a missive from Himaggery written eight years before.
The missive tells her that he is leaving for the Northlands to track down some old legends. He is writing this letter just in case he does not return. The note tells her that a messenger will meet her near the Monuments outside Pfarb Durim.
Mavin sets out for the Monuments the following morning. There she is met by a fustigar, who shapeshifts to Throsset of Dowes. Mavin has known of Throsset as another Danderbat female, but had never met her.
Throsset briefs Mavin on everything important that has happen to her friends and enemies. She also gives Mavin a copy of the Northlands map that Himaggery took with him on his quest. Mavin gives Throsset the gist of her adventures and then they separate.
First Mavin visits demesne of the High Wizard Chamferton. She listens to his story, but somehow doesn't feel that she can trust him. When she sees Valdon leaving the tower at dawn the next day, she KNOWS that she cannot trust the wizard.
Mavin does pick up some clues from Chamferton. She follows the runners on the old north road. She checks their faces to determine whether Himaggery is with them and then continues to follow them northward.
Then a Dervish comes to warn her. After the Dervish leaves, Mavin follows the whirlwind traces back to the Dervish's home. There she finds a familiar singlehorn and a problem.
This tale takes Mavin over the ancient road with a singlehorn and a pompi. They are followed by shadows. The Dervish has told Mavin to not change the shape of her companions until she has traveled five days beyond the shadows.
Mavin finds an old and dangerous legend in the Northlands. Her travels take her far on the ancient road circuit. She meets some new and some old friends on her journey.
This is the last novel in this subseries. The next volume in the sequence is King's Blood Four, the first volume published in the original True Game series. Read and enjoy!
Highly recommended for Tepper fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure, convoluted fantasy, and dedicated women. For anyone who is not familiar with this subseries, the initial volume is The Song of Mavin Manyshaped.

The Search of Mavin Manyshaped Sheri S Tepper 9780441757121 Books Reviews
Mavin sets out to find the wizard type she has a thing for, after he
fails to show for a prearranged meeting. Hoping he is not dead, it is
quest time again.
This series (and author) is one of my favorites. While I didn't care for the series finales' ending (in Jinian Star-Eye), all books in the Land of the True Game are well worth the read. And unlike so many books today, they are a manageable size. The three Mavin books are great, possibly the best in this unique and special series.
It takes a special kind of author to manage the writing of a nine volume series. And an even rarer author who can write a long series that will stand up to intensive reading. Sheri Tepper is once such author that has the knack. When the volumes of the Lands of the True Game first came out Tepper was a little known writer, breaking into the world of science fiction and fantasy. By the writing of this volume, the last in the series, Tepper was an established writer with a loyal audience.
It is hard to point to any one volume, character or idea and say that this is what made the work so successful. And perhaps that is part of Tepper's secret, her ability to shift point of view and narrator, introduce new and spectacular characters, and add layer upon layer to a complex world. Through her three protagonists, Peter, Jinian and Mavin we explore a world where both magic, science, ecology and witchcraft happily blend together without a single hitch.
This is Mavin's last tale, finally come to fulfill her promise to Himaggery and meet him after 20 years in the city of Pfarb Durim. Quite a lot has gone into get there again, and Mavin is stunned to find that Himaggery is not to be found. That eight years earlier the wizard set out and a quest and was eaten up by it. Windlow the Seer knows that his friend is not dead, but all efforts to find him have failed. Now Himaggery's quest must become Mavin's quest as she slowly retraces his steps to uncover betrayal and mystery in a story full of old friends and new enemies.
This is Mavin's greatest test. Not because it takes great courage or incredible wits to survive, but because Mavin find's herself facing her real issues as a woman and a shifter. Finding Himaggery and returning the wizard to himself turn out to be to separate and difficult thinks. Maven's need for freedom and independent conflict with her commitment, and she begins to find that responsibility is a lump thing about which one must always make difficult choices. Finding that she has managed to conceive Himaggery's child introduces another layer of complication, and forces her to discover that Mavin need not shift to be Mavin.
But who Mavin really is and how she will save both Himaggery and herself is the crux of the book. Even more so than it is a tricksy tale of harpies and shadows. Mavin's trilogy does much to open of the Tepper's world to the reader and lay the groundwork for the other stories in the series. It is a world that will remain on my shelves forever, waiting for the next time I need to follow the Eesties road.
All was perfect
Love this book, the varying abilities of the different games people and adventures of Mavin. The author develops the characters and has you believing in their actions and supporting Mavin in her actions.
I have been looking for this for years (the 3rd in the trilogy). I had given up looking and so delighted to find a copy! I'm not writing another thing- get your own copy )
