Coming of Age in Berkeley Jake Warner 9790692106432 Books

A book slips to the ground, having fallen through the hole in the bottom of her book bag. Picking it up Alex begins after the girls with caramel hair, then she turns and the world stops. A "love at first sight" story, Coming of Age in Berkeley is not your average romance. Instead it is laced with the difficulties of a large age difference, an overly protective mom, and a psycho who after three years appears and begins threatening the family.

Tamiko and Alex are pulled together immediately upon seeing each other on the college campus of UC Berkeley. The thing is, Tamiko is 15, a high schooler who is incredibly smart and taking college courses to keep her busy.  Alex is, well, not in high school.  In fact he is a 22 year old Berkeley student, but even knowing the age difference he can't seem to pull himself away from Tamiko. As they fight to stay together, to actually have the option to be a couple, they must deal with the disapproval of Amy, Tami's mom.  But in a whirlwind of events, Alex proves himself and his love for Tami in just a matter of days when he ends up saving not only Amy but also Tamiko when a man from Amy's past returns.

When I first started reading Coming of Age in Berkeley, I wasn't really sure how the book was going to turn out. It's a pretty long book, and I couldn't image just reading about these two young characters trying to be together. But that is exactly when the action comes in. I was happily surprised with the way the author really amped up the action and the book turned much more exciting than I expected. I really ended up enjoying Coming of Age in Berkeley and found myself wanting to keep reading to find out what would happen next. I highly recommend this book and think it would be best for a young adult reader or someone that is more mature and can handle some more adult topics.  The are sexual scenes and language in this book.  Happy Reading.

3 Stars....

Coming of Age in Berkeley is a unique story about 15 year old Tamiko who falls in love with 22 year old Alec Burns. Yes, there is an age difference here and Tamiko is YOUNG, but I think the author does a good job of cultivating their relationship with respect and class. Especially considering Tamiko has so much going for her. She’s so smart and a great athlete. Tamiko and Alec are two young people hopelessly in love. It’s a little like Romeo and Juliet which the author refers to as well, but not completely. There is no familial feud here. The story does feature an overprotective single mom, Amy, who wants to keep her little girl safe and sound for as long as she can. And after Amy’s own bad experiences which come to back haunt everyone, who can blame her? I really enjoyed watching Amy come around to the idea of Tamiko and Alex’s relationship, as hard as it was for her to accept. I could relate to that side of Amy and think many others will as well.

Amy hasn’t had an easy time, and her ability to be a conscientious parent is a testament to her strength. She’s been through so much pain and heartache, and parts of this story were surprisingly dark. One of my favorite parts of this book is the secondary characters and how well developed they are. Amy’s “friend” Ed is so protective of both Amy and Tamiko that it warmed my heart. Ed also has a way of calming Amy, being the buffer between her and her teenage daughter without being obnoxious or condescending. I loved that about him! After all the Amy’s been through, Ed is the perfect man for her.

The one thing I find myself gravitating more and more to is the damsel in distress storyline with a protective hero. I LOVE THIS TYPE OF STORY! Alec was the perfect hero in this book. During the particularly dark and suspenseful parts of the story, it’s Alec who keeps us in the light. He’s perfect for Tamiko, despite being so much older. I could see why she was drawn to him.

The writing is good, the story is well crafted. The only thing that kept me from rating this book higher, is that I didn’t find Tamiko and Alec’s dialogue to be completely convincing of their respective ages. It's possible that this is a new genre for this author, and he may not be as familiar with YA dialogue and thought process as some seasoned YA writers, but I appreciated the type of the story the author is telling.
Jake Warner, ‘Coming of Age in Berkeley’

As a Hidden Gem ARC reader I received this book for free. And promised an honest review. Here it is.

English isn’t my first language. Sorry for errors.

Rating 4,5 stars (of 5).

Main characters
- Alec Burns, college student (22 years old).
He was a succesful pentathlon athlete. But realised a few years ago that
topsport takes a lot of time to train, so he quit and returned to college.

- Tamiko O’Shea Gashkin (15). Her father was killed when she was 12 years old. She’s a very intelligent student, helping her mother Amy who works (and has a relationship with her boss) at the book publisher firm Bay Books. Tamiko is good at sports, especially softball.

Tamiko’s mother forbids her 15 year old daughter contact with a 22 years old college student. But the next day the two youngsters meet again, they like each other and have a quick kiss, a first for Tami. They keep seeing each other around summer-classes, but before their relationship develops Alec has to stop a short term affair with an foreign girlfriend who will return to Korea within a few weeks. Alec is surprised that Tamiko gives him time to end the affair with his Korean girlfriend. Tamiko and Alec decide to meet only in public places, for Alec realises that it’s important for Tami to keep a good band with her mother.
So very carefully Tamiko and Alec get to know each other better and guardedly their love develops. The author describes with a lot of feeling and insight how all the persons who are involved step by step accept this relationship between a young girl and an older boyfriend. The main characters are sympathetic and credible. The dialogues fast, sassy and often very interesting. So for me the book was a page turner. A real pleasure to read, in spite of the text not yet divided in chapters and paragraphs.
